Doodle Baseball

Doodle Baseball is the game Google put on its homepage for the Fourth of July in 2019. A team of cookout foods bats against a team of peanuts, and you swing for them. Many people still search for it as Google Baseball or the 4th of July baseball game. Play it here any time, free, on a computer or a phone.

How to play Google Baseball

  • Press Play. The peanut pitcher winds up and throws.
  • Swing when the ball reaches the plate: click the mouse, tap the screen, or press Space.
  • Hit the ball into the field for a single, double or triple. Runners move round the bases and score runs.
  • Hit it far enough and it is a home run. The game shows how many feet it went.
  • A miss is a strike. Three strikes and you're out, and the game ends. Your runs are your score.

The food team

Each batter has a nickname on its own baseball card. The batting order has nine foods:

  • "Sluggin' Sirloin", a steak
  • "H-Dog", a hot dog
  • "The Cobbra", corn on the cob
  • "Power Pop", a box of popcorn
  • "Big Red", a watermelon slice
  • "The Sauce", a ketchup bottle
  • "Wild Slice", a slice of pizza
  • "2 Scoops", an ice cream cone
  • "The Triple", a triple burger

The other team is all peanuts: the pitcher and the fielders. That is why people also call it the baseball food game, fruit baseball or the peanut baseball game.

The pitches

The first pitches come in straight. Then the peanut adds more:

  • a slow, high lob that drops onto the plate
  • a corkscrew that spins on its way in
  • a wobble that swerves left and right
  • a ball that fades from sight before it arrives
  • after about a dozen pitches, a fastball

The more runs you score, the faster the pitches get.

The Fourth of July 2019 doodle

Google launched the baseball doodle on 4 July 2019 for U.S. Independence Day. It called it a "backyard BBQ ball game", where "classic American summertime snacks are stepping up to the plate for a chance to hit it out of the park". The share message asked players to "step up to the plate in today's #GoogleDoodle BBQ ball game".
